Driving to PEI

A map of PEI can be found using google maps. However, for driving to Charlottetown there are two posibilities:
  • Driving from Moncton.
Take Route 15 east towards Shediac and continue to Port Elgin. At Port Elgin, take Route 16 northeast to Confederation Bridge (the other road is going to Nova Scotia). After crossing the Confederation Bridge, you take right following Hwy 1 (TransCanada Highway) to Charlottetown. It takes approximatively 45 minutes to drive from the bridge to Charlottetown.
  • Driving from Halifax.
Please note that Halifax Airport is aproximately 30 km north of Halifax and the route to PEI does not go through the city. From the airport, there are two possible choices:
    • From Halifax International Airport, via Confederation Bridge
Take Route 102 north to Truro. At Exit #15, take Route 104 west (TransCanada Highway) through Nova Scotia to Aulac, New Brunswick. At Aulac, take exit 513B on to Route 16 north and follow the signs for Prince Edward Island to Confederation Bridge. You have to be carefull for this exit, since there are two consecutive exits in a very short distance. Once you are on Route 16 North, you follow the same directions as the ones listed for Driving from Moncton.
    • From Halifax International Airport, via Northumberland Ferry
Take Route 102 north to Truro. At Exit # 15, take Route 104 east (TransCanada Highway) to New Glasgow (NS). After you pass Westville, you start looking for the signs for "Ferry to Prince Edward Island". You must take Exit # 22 and follow Route 106 (TransCanada Highway) to Caribou, where you'll stop and wait for the the Northumberland Ferry. Crossing takes about 75 minutes. You will arrive in Wood Islands (PE). There you can go left and follow (a scenic route) Route 1 (TransCanada Highway) up to Charlottetown, or take right on Route 315, then Route 23, then back to Route 1 (this is a shortcut). If you are not sure, just keep Route 1 (TransCanada Highway).
UPEI is on Route 1 (TransCanada Highway). For arriving to New Residence, if comming from the bridge you must take left at first trafic light on Belvedere Avenue, after you pass the main entrance on University Avenue; if comming from the ferry, you must take right at first trafic light after you pass a Sobey on the right, the local CBC station and RCMP Police Station. You will see a plain field on the right side and Atlantic Superstore on the left. At the first intersection on the left side is the entrance to the University of Prince Edward Island. You enter, take left and follow the road (to the right) to the New Residence.
For reaching other listed hotels:
  • Holiday Inn is on the TransCanada Highway, on the right side if you come from the Bridge, after you pass Cornwall, a Shell Gas Station, and RCMP Police Station.
  • Rodd Royalty Inn is just 1 km ahead from Holiday Inn, after you pass two trafic lights.
  • Quality Inn on the Hill is on the left side if you come from the Bridge, after you pass UPEI, at 2.7 km. You can see a small Shell gas station on the right side, and at that trafic light, you must turn left. The hotel is just 10m after this intersection. If you come from the ferry following Route 1 (TransCanada Highway), you take right in front of the Confederation House, then right again at the second trafic light.
  • The Great George Hotel is just behind the Conferation House.
